Real vs nominal age: which counts

Real age (full years since birth) rules everything official: law, healthcare, insurance, exam eligibility. Nominal age (one at birth, plus one each Lunar New Year) survives only in tradition — New Year greetings, fortune-telling, ritual seniority.

Rule of thumb: anything the government, hospital, bank, or school asks for is real age. Nominal age is for grandma and the lunar calendar.

School entry: the September 1 cutoff

Taiwan elementary schools cut off on September 1: born on or before 9/1 with 6 full years means starting this year; later birthdays wait a year. Set the calculator end date to Sept 1 to check instantly.

Kindergarten early entry and private-school admissions vary — always follow the admission brochure cutoff, not just the age.

Zodiac animals and star signs

Calendar year works for everyday zodiac reference. Traditional astrology uses lichun (around Feb 3–5, shifts yearly) — born before lichun counts as the previous year, which is why a Lunar New Year Eve baby can belong to last year’s animal.

Star signs follow solar-date ranges, but boundary days drift yearly — verify cusp birthdays with a chart. Lunar birthdays must be converted to solar dates first, differing every year.

Converting lunar birthdays

ID cards always record the solar date; lunar dates serve birthdays and almanac days only. There is no formula — consult a perpetual calendar, since Lunar New Year maps to a different solar date yearly, worse in leap years.

Lunar-birthday celebrants should confirm that year’s solar equivalent before booking dinner. For elders, just ask — more reliable than converting solo.
