Sort before you pack
Five groups: documents and money, electronics, toiletries, clothing, daily medication. Same-group items together in pouches — no more dumping the whole case to find one cable.
Bottom layer for rarely used items, valuables and daily items on top. Liquids and power banks follow different rules, so split them before deciding checked vs carry-on.
Clothing compression tricks
Rolling beats folding for space and wrinkles. Layer thin clothes onion-style instead of one bulky coat. Stuff socks and cables inside shoes — zero wasted volume.
Use vacuum bags for puffy jackets and unpack them at the hotel. For trips over 5 days, plan one laundry day instead of three extra outfits.
Carry-on essentials
The standard answer: documents, medication, chargers, one change of clothes, valuables. If checked luggage is lost or delayed, this bag carries you 24 hours.
Medication goes in carry-on, never checked (temperature and loss risk). Liquids follow the 100ml zip-bag rule. Photograph key documents to your phone plus one cloud copy.
Leave room for the return
Pack 70% full on departure — the rest belongs to souvenirs. Bring one foldable spare bag; an extra carry-on beats overweight fees.
Wrap fragile souvenirs in clothes at the case center. Bottled souvenirs (wine, sauces) always go checked and sealed — one leak ruins everything.

What do I do about overweight luggage?
Wear the three heaviest items (coat, boots), move books and heavy gear to carry-on. If that fails, buying extra allowance online is usually half the airport overweight fee.
What is the liquids rule for flights?
Each container max 100ml, all inside one 1-liter transparent zip bag, one bag per person. The rest goes checked. Medication and baby food are exempt — declare them at security.
Can I bring medication abroad?
Personal medication is fine; bring the prescription or pill-bottle label. Pseudoephedrine cold medicine and strong painkillers are tightly controlled in Japan and Singapore — check destination rules first.
Souvenirs: checked or carry-on?
Durable items go checked. Fragile and bottled items go center-case wrapped in clothes. High-value goods (luxury, electronics) stay in carry-on. Lighters and sprays follow airline banned lists.
